WATERCOOLER CHAT: GIANTS BATS READY, CAVS ROLLING, GRIFFIN DEBUT
BASEBALL
In baseball, it was Game 1 of the World Series between the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants. The National League won the All-Star game, which awarded the Giants home-field advantage in this series. The Rangers put their Ace pitcher Cliff Lee on the mound. He has been absolutely dominate this post-season, making the Yankees look like a Little League Team. And the Giants put in their ace Tim Lincecum. It was expected to be a pitcher’s duel. Well, that didn’t happen at all. The Giants bats were ready for Lee and basically shellacked him. In the 5th inning, the Giants had Lee figured out (just when Lee had thought he’d settled in) and went on a hitting streak to make the score 5-2. After that, there was no looking back as the Giants looked determined and ready to take this series. San Francisco 11, Texas 7.
BASKETBALL
And it was the second night in the official NBA season. One of the most interesting games of the night was the Boston Celtics vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Celtics hammered LeBron and his new team the Heat last night, so how would LeBron’s old team fair against the Celtics… without LeBron. The answer: Pretty well. The Cavs were jelling last night, looked like they were having fun out there, and the crowd was into it. J.J. Hickson is a developing star for the Cavs and finished the night with 21 points. The Cavs are unofficially becoming America’s team — everybody is rooting for them to win. They are the ultimate underdog with a depressed fan base. Let’s see if they can keep things rolling. Cleveland 95, Boston 87.
Elsewhere in the NBA, it was the debut of 2009’s #1 pick Blake Griffin. The Clippers selected Griffin to be the savior of the franchise. Unfortunately, in last year’s pre-season, Griffin got hurt, and the Clipper organization decided to rest him the whole year just to be safe. Last night, we got to see what he could do — and he was AWESOME! His first 2 points of his career came off a monster offensive dunk put-back. This guy is arguably one of the top 5 athletes in the NBA, and he finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Plus, the Clippers have a nice supporting cast around him which includes Baron Davis, Chris Kaman, and a now Olympic gold medalist Eric Gordon. The Clippers actually might get taken seriously this year. Then again, they didn’t win last night, as the Portland Trailblazers showed why THEY should be a team to be reckoned with in the West. Portland 98, LA Clippers 88.
