Opening Day In MLB, Rule Changes For Shorter More Exciting Games, Adam Silver As Disney CEO?
BASEBALL
Today is Opening Day for Major League Baseball. There are a slew of new rules to follow (here’s a good guide), but the main goal of the changes is to shorten the length of the games and increase the action. In 2021, the longest game stretched 3 hours and 10 minutes.
Now, there is a pitch clock, shift restrictions, limited pickoffs, and bigger bases.
BASKETBALL
Disney is looking to appoint a new CEO, and there’s a rumor that NBA commissioner Adam Silver is in the running. Silver has denied he’s interested in the job.

Men’s & Women’s Final Four Brackets Set, Tiger & Trout’s New Golf Course
BASKETBALL
The men’s and women’s Final Four brackets are set.
In the women’s bracket, there are three teams looking for their first national championship: Virginia Tech (appearing in Final Four for the first time), Iowa (first time since 1993), and LSU (first time since 2008). Rounding out the group is South Carolina which won the tournament in 2022. LSU vs Virginia Tech on Friday March 31st at 7:00 pm and Iowa vs South Carolina on March 31st at 9:00 pm.
In the men’s bracket, no top seeds remain. The Final Four features Florida Atlantic vs San Diego State on April 1st at 6:09 pm, and UConn vs Miami on April 1st at 8:49 pm.
GOLF
Tiger Woods (golf Legend) and Mike Trout (MLB All-Star) are joining forces to build a new golf course in New Jersey called Trout National. Tiger’s architecture firm, TGR Design, will design the course which will include a wedding chapel and five-star accommodations.

Brady’s Minority Stake In Aces, Gonzaga, Kansas State, FAU, & UConn Move On

Tom Brady announced he’s acquiring a minority ownership in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces. The Aces won the WNBA championship last season. Brady also has a stake in a Major League Pickleball team.
BASKETBALL
Thursday night’s NCAA games did not disappoint. Gonzaga (ranked #3) defeated #2 ranked UCLA in an exciting 79-76 victory that went down to the wire.
Kansas State defeated Michigan State in overtime (98-93). FAU reached the Elite Eight after defeating Tennessee, and UConn knocked off Arkansas to be back in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2014 (when they won the national championship).

Japan Beat Team USA In World Baseball Classic, Anderson Replacing Pitino, Pitino Heading To St. Johns, Cooley Replacing Ewing, Magic Johnson Joins Harris

Japan beat Team USA in the much-hyped World Baseball Classic Championship. The tournament did not disappoint, and the final moment when Los Angeles Angels’ teammates Shohei Ohtani (representing Japan) struck out Mike Trout added to the drama. After Japan’s 3-2 victory, Ohtani said, “I believe this is the best moment in my life.”

In some big coaching news, Tobin Anderson is leaving Fairleigh Dickinson (after the team’s historic Cinderella run in the NCAA tournament) and replacing Rick Pitino at Ion. Pitino will be taking over at St. Johns. And, Georgetown hired former Providence coach Ed Cooley to take over for a fired Patrick Ewing.
NBA Superstar Magic Johnson joined the investment group led by Josh Harris in an effort to buy the Washington Commanders. The group is attempting to reach a deal before the NFL’s annual league meeting on Sunday.

Upsets In NCAA Tournament, No More Perfect Brackets On ESPN, Red Bull Team Wins Again
BASKETBALL
There were some exciting upsets over the weekend in the NCAA tournament. Number 16 Fairleigh Dickinson overcame #1 seed Purdue, becoming just the second #16 seed to upset a top seed. Their Cinderella story came to an end, however, on Sunday when #9 Florida Atlantic ousted FDU giving FAU their first Sweet 16 appearance in program history. FAU will take on #4 Tennessee on Thursday.
In another big upset, #1 seed Kansas (the defending national champion) lost to #8 Arkansas. And, Princeton continues their historic run after beating Missouri. The Tigers will be appearing in their first Sweet 16 ever.
In the women’s bracket, No. 8 seed Ole Miss beat #1 seed Stanford leading to no more perfect women’s brackets on ESPN. On the men’s side, ESPN reported there were no more perfect brackets as of last Friday.

Princeton Upsets Arizona, Michael Jordan Selling Stake In Hornets, Díaz Likely Season-Ending Injury

We have the first big upset of March Madness! Princeton upset Arizona. It’s only the 11th time a #15 seed upset a #2 seed in tournament history.
According to reports, Michael Jordan may sell his controlling stake in the Charlotte Hornets.
BASEBALL
New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz, who just signed a massive contract, will likely miss the season after suffering an injury while celebrating Puerto Rico’s win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic in Miami on Wednesday.

Ja Morant will return on March 20th after serving an eight game suspension.

The Cowboys are releasing running back Ezekiel Elliott after four years of his six year contract extension worth $90 million.
Green Bay Packer quarterback Aaron Rodgers has officially stated he wants to play for the New York Jets next year. Nothing has been signed yet, so we’ll have to wait and see what the deal looks like.
The New England Patriots agreed to a deal with former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster after losing their top receiver Jakobi Myers to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Garoppolo To Raiders For $67.5 Mill, March Madness Begins, Alabama First Ever #1 Spot, Ja Morant Enters Counseling

The Las Vegas Raiders agreed to a deal with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for $67.5 million ($34 million guaranteed) for three-years.
BASKETBALL
The NCAA basketball tournament known as March Madness begins Tuesday with two play-in games and then two play-in games on Wednesday. The first and second rounds will be played from March 16th-19th. The Final Four will be on April 1st and the championship game on April 3rd.
Alabama earned their first ever #1 seed, while Houston, Kansas and Purdue also earned #1 spots.
In the NBA, Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant (a two-time All Star and former Rookie of the Year) has entered counseling for his “pattern of questionable decision-making and behavior.” There is no timetable for his return.

Kevin Durant Suffers Ankle Injury, Georgetown Fires Patrick Ewing

Phoenix Suns’ Kevin Durant suffered an ankle sprain during warmups on Wednesday and is out indefinitely. Durant recently joined the Suns and has only played thee games in Phoenix (in which he was really impactful). The Suns are hoping for a quick recovery, as he was part of an expensive package.
In college hoops, Georgetown fired head coach Patrick Ewing (#1 pick in the 1985 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 ). One of the potential (albeit controversial) new coaches could be Rick Patino.

Tuesday marked the deadline for teams to designate players getting a franchise tag. Before the deadline there were some noteworthy deals.
The New Orleans Saints agreed to a four-year $150 million ($70 million guaranteed) contract with quarterback Derek Carr.
The Seattle Seahawks and quarterback Geno Smith agreed to a 3-year $105 million extension after a season where he won NFL Comeback Player of the Year.
The New York Giants agreed to a four-year $160 million deal with quarterback Daniel Jones.
Tom Brady went on Twitter to dispel rumors that he is coming out of retirement (again). He wrote, “Anyone who thinks I have time to come back to the NFL has never adopted a 2 month old kitten for their daughter.”

The Memphis Grizzlies held a team meeting that centered around proper behavior on the road. According to The Athletic, the meeting occurred BEFORE Ja Morant got in trouble (and will be out at least two games) for brandishing a gun at a nightclub.

After recently signing a three-year deal, fifteen-year old Chloe Ricketts is the youngest player in National Women’s Soccer League history. The high school sophomore from Michigan signed with the Washington Spirit
